The Mic Goes on the Pencil

THE QUESTION

Roastie, how should I respond to people who complain about lapel mics on sticks?

ROASTIE ANSWERS

Every time a creator holds up a lapel mic taped to a pencil, some walking thumb in the comments types "I hate this trend." And there it is. The sound of a person who has never once in their life asked themselves why anything works, confidently announcing that to strangers, discovering the outline of their own ignorance and mistaking it for an insight.

Here it is at a speed your brain can follow.

A $20 lapel mic held an inch from your mouth sounds good. The same mic clipped to your shirt sounds like a drowning cat in a laundromat. That's physics. The same physics you slept through so you could grow up and type "why not just clip it."

You know where the stick came from? People recording with wired Apple earbuds and pinching that little inline mic up to their face. It sounded fine. Then somebody taped it to a pencil so their hand wouldn't cramp, because unlike you, they solve problems instead of narrating them. Then somebody swapped the earbud mic for a lapel mic. Then people started decorating the stick, because creators have personalities and you have a burner account and a grudge against anyone who has ever been creative.

It evolved in public, on video, with millions of views, and you still managed to miss it. That takes effort.

"They should just get a real mic." Oh, a real mic. A Shure SM7B. Four hundred dollars for the mic, another few hundred for a preamp because it's gain-hungry, a boom arm because it's built like a fire hydrant, and then it sits in front of your face like a mailbox so nobody can see the product, the outfit, or the person they clicked on.

Maybe you could pick out the difference in a blind listening test if I gave you a week and a hearing aid, but what you could definitely hear is the difference between either option and a lapel mic buried in a hoodie.

The mic goes on the pencil. Put some glitter on it. It works. It's cheaper than your opinion but worth more.
