WHERE YOU ARE
Nothing thrown
BAD ADVICE. GOOD TIMING.
Three coins, six throws, one hexagram. The I Ching is the oldest book of advice on earth, and Roastie reads it live, which is the one way to get it with no advice in it. Ask a question or don't. The book has seen you.
Ask about you, ask about one thing. The book doesn't do lottery numbers. Can't think of one? Steal one of these.
WHERE YOU ARE
Nothing thrown
WHERE IT'S HEADING
SIX THROWS. ONE AT A TIME.
Text: the I Ching, after James Legge's 1882 translation, public domain. Readings: a coffee bean, licensed in nothing. Throws are random, the contempt is not. All sixty-four hexagrams, with Roastie's take on each.
THREE COINS, SIX THROWS. Heads counts 3, tails counts 2, and the three faces add up to the line: 6, 7, 8 or 9. Odd is yang, a solid bar. Even is yin, a broken one. Six and nine are the old lines, the ones with too much of themselves in them, and they are the ones that move. The first throw is the bottom line and the hexagram grows upward from there, the way the book has done it since before anyone had coins.
THE ODDS ARE NOT A SECRET. Each throw is three fair coins, so a 7 or an 8 comes up three times in eight and a 6 or a 9 once in eight. A line is yang or yin at even odds, and it moves one time in four. Over six throws that is a line and a half moving on average. About one cast in six has nothing moving at all, and all six moving is one cast in 4,096. The yarrow-stalk method the old masters used tilts those odds toward old yang and away from old yin. We use the coins. The coins are faster, and the masters are unavailable for comment.
THE COINS ARE THROWN ON YOUR DEVICE. Each face comes from your browser's cryptographic random generator, the same source it uses to make the keys that keep your bank login private. Nothing is weighted, nothing is seeded by your question, and nothing is thrown on our side. The server only ever sees the six line values, re-derives both hexagrams from them, and refuses anything that is not a legal cast. Your question does not touch the throw. It only makes the result hurt more.
THE BOOK IS THE BOOK. The hexagram names, the images, the judgments and the line texts come from James Legge's 1882 translation, public domain, trimmed into plain English. Lines are matched to the book by their pattern, not picked by anyone. What Roastie is handed is printed under every reading, so you can check that he was given the cast you threw and not a better one.
THEN THE BEAN READS IT. Roastie gets the cast, the book's own words for it, and your question, and works from those and nothing else. He may leave things out. He may not invent a hexagram, a line or a meaning. The cast is random. The contempt is on purpose.
