HEXAGRAM 29 OF 64 WATER OVER WATER

THE ABYSMAL

坎 Kǎn

danger, the abyss, repeated peril, water that keeps flowing, sincerity under pressure

ROASTIE

The Abysmal. Water over Water, danger doubled, a pit inside a pit. The book says sincerity gets the heart through. The book has not seen you in a hole. You get into a hole and immediately start decorating it. Two abysses, one after the other, and you'll say the second one has better light. Ya roasted!

THE JUDGMENT

Danger doubled. With sincerity the heart gets through; action brings reward.

THE LINES, BOTTOM TO TOP

  1. Line 1 In the pit, and falling into a deeper hole within it; misfortune.
  2. Line 2 The pit is dangerous; strive only for small gains for now.
  3. Line 3 Pit after pit; danger ahead and behind; falling into a hole within the pit; do nothing.
  4. Line 4 A jar of wine and a bowl of rice in plain earthenware, passed in through the window; no mistake.
  5. Line 5 The pit does not overflow; water reaches only the level and stops; no mistake.
  6. Line 6 Bound with cords and shut in among thorns; for three years nothing is gained; misfortune.
