Paint‑Thinner for the Soul
Today is National Seafood Bisque Day, honoring the lobster's second act as a cream sauce with a backstory. It's also Evaluate Your Life Day, parked on a Monday by someone who wanted you to flunk. Relax, the evaluation already ran. It's called your search history, and it is not appealing the grade.
Spoon down. Now the news.
WRECKAGE WITH TOP BILLING
The UN stopped feeding 500,000 people in Gaza after Trump cut its funding.
GAZA: The trucks can get in. Shaun Hughes, who runs WFP in Gaza, said the access is there and the money is not. The agency got about half its usual funding this year after the Trump administration gutted U.S. payments to the UN. So the richest government in history looked at 1.4 million acutely hungry people and found the line item it could stomach cutting. Meanwhile, Israel kept commercial shipments out for a fifth day, blaming merchants for quitting over Hamas-imposed charges, which Gaza's media office denied. Eggs in Jabalia reportedly went from 35 shekels to as much as 70 in days. Two governments reached the same hungry people from opposite sides, one locking the gate, one emptying the wallet. Neither will miss a meal, because the hunger was never a side effect. It was the fucking point. 🦆
France ordered curfews and kept the minister who admitted police lost control.
FRANCE: Nineteen days in, a weekend of nearly 2,400 arrests bought France a bedtime and shut the Louvre. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu asked for "partial" and "localised" curfews, with a state of emergency "if necessary" parked behind them. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez admitted police "lost control" and offered to resign. Macron refused, because the one man in government telling the truth is worth more in chains than loose with a microphone. Macron then swore nothing justifies it, nothing explains it, nothing excuses it, and admitted "failures in anticipation and intelligence" in the same address. That is an explanation, Emmanuel, and it has your name on it. Marine Le Pen leads April's polls and the Yellow Vests booked Saturday. Every curfew Lecornu signs is a campaign flyer she didn't have to print. 🦆
China's economy grew 4.5% by selling to everyone except the Chinese.
CHINA: Beijing beat the forecast and landed inside its own growth target, the victory you get when you also wrote the exam. The factories are roaring and the output is sailing out the back door in a container, because hardly anyone at home is walking in the front. Retail sales crawled up 1.1% in September and fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% over nine months, so the shoppers stayed home and the builders went with them. The housing crash ate the living room, so the living rooms China furnishes now belong to other countries. Even the professional number-polishers at the National Bureau of Statistics flagged insufficient domestic demand. Beijing hit its number the way a household hits its budget, by skipping dinner and calling the empty plate discipline. 🦆
Anthropic pledged 5% of itself to a fund that could pay the workers AI displaces.
Anthropic announced the Public Benefit Fund Oct. 18, which could wire cash straight to "specific populations," and its own example was the job market. So the outfit building the thing that eats professions bolted a severance jar to the machine. Imagine every trade a human ever learned, every craft handed down, every midnight résumé, fed into a server, and out the far side slides a check. The pledge still needs stockholder approval, so the conscience is pending a vote from the people it costs money. The board may add more as the company's value climbs past a baseline it hasn't disclosed, so the generosity tracks a number nobody outside the room gets to see. Every industry that ever flattened a trade sold bandages afterward. This one priced them into the launch, then asked the owners for permission to bleed. 🦆
ORDNANCE IN THE CLASSIFIEDS
Congo's hospitals most likely gave children the Ebola they came in without.
CONGO: The virus was waiting in the ward. Of the 30 children Doctors Without Borders admitted to its Butembo treatment center between June and September, 24 died, most under five. Most had spent days or weeks in other hospitals first, and their families did not have Ebola. MSF's coordinator called it highly likely they caught it inside the facilities meant to treat them. A hospital is the one building our species put up on the promise that sickness stops at the door. In Congo the door ran backwards. The outbreak this desk has followed since August reached an eighth province on Sunday, and WHO's Africa director said the pockets are shrinking while the map grows. That is a fire bragging about the rooms it finished. 🦆
Google's AI out-forecast the government's own models on Hurricane Isaias.
The National Hurricane Center leaned on Google DeepMind's model for Isaias. The legacy European and American physics ensembles ran track errors more than double their five-year average and showed up about a day late on landfall. DeepMind pinned the timing within a few hours, three days out. So the agency whose whole job is telling people when the sky is coming now reads an ad company's homework aloud under the federal seal. Wallace Hogsett, who wired the AI in, left in June to found a startup, because this country keeps competence like a sieve keeps soup. "No weather model will ever be perfect in my lifetime," he said. The physics models proved him right by booking the hurricane for the day after it arrived. 🦆

HOMEWORK FOR THE LIVING
Trump's free diesel is a tax bill the IRS may send later.
Freelance tax-forgiver Donald Trump's Oct. 5 order let highway trucks burn red-dyed farm diesel tax-free through the end of the year. It only deferred the 24.4-cent federal tax, since, as a Cato fellow noted, a president can't order the IRS to stop collecting. He paused the looking. The IRS said it won't inspect tanks or write penalties this year, a cop pocketing the radar gun while the camera on the pole keeps filming your plate. South Dakota's governor told drivers not to pump the stuff, then ordered his own officials not to check, then called it "very confusing," which is a confession on letterhead. For once a politician was accurate. The IRS also anticipates "further guidance," federal for "we'll tell you what you owed after you've spent it." Truckers should keep every receipt, because the discount is a loan, the lender is the IRS, and that motherfucker has never once forgotten a cent. 🦆
WHAT WENT QUIET
A week after raiding Rep. Omar's home, the feds have charged nobody and answered nothing.
The DOJ says it's chasing three-decade-old alleged immigration fraud, and Omar denies it. A watchdog asked the Office of Special Counsel whether the timing broke the Hatch Act, the law against politicking on the federal clock, and got a smoke alarm with the battery yanked. The raid got cameras, the silence got the week, and the press left at intermission. 🦆
Eleven days on, Huckabee's adviser still faces no inquiry for reportedly rewriting embassy reports.
ISRAEL: Huckabee "personally and categorically" denied it, and that denial remains the entire investigation, filed under nothing by nobody. His latest comment praised Israeli police for arresting ten people over settler attacks on a journalist and diplomats, "a very positive development." Attacking diplomats is a crime with fists and, reportedly down his own hall, a staffing choice with a red pen. 🦆
JOY THE ALGORITHM SKIPPED
Livermore simulated nuking an asteroid, and 145 milliseconds took the computers 59 days.
Most of a mountain got evicted from its own gravity faster than a blink. Then 1,680 processors rewound that blink frame by frame like a dad who swears the ref missed a holding call. 🦆
CRUMBS, STILL SMOLDERING
Ukrainians and Sudanese kept protected status because DHS never got around to deciding.
Their right to stay now rests on nobody at DHS filing a form, the same force that keeps a dead man's magazine subscription arriving. A clerk's untouched inbox is doing more for refugees than Congress. 🦆
ONE GOOD THING TO END ON
Humpback whales caught 23% more fish once sea lions showed up to mooch.
CALIFORNIA: Nine years of whale-cam, one lesson: let the freeloaders in. Sea lions pack the anchovies tight, the whale eats the ball, sea lions eat the spill. I love these greasy geniuses more than I love any of you. 🦆
That's the firehose. Hunt next to something bigger and louder than you and take credit for the haul. Budget two months for anything that takes a tenth of a second. And keep the receipt for every "pause," because the bill has your address and it is patient. Tomorrow is World Statistics Day, which also happens to be National Brandied Fruit Day and World Osteoporosis Day, a combination that statistically ends with somebody hip-checking a cabinet after their third rum-soaked cherry. Ninety-nine percent of statistics are invented on the spot, and so is the fruit's expiration date.
Until next time —
Ya roasted!
