The Daily Chronicle of ‘I Told You So’
Happy World Statistics Day, the one holiday where 40 percent of the people celebrating were made up to pad the sample. It's also National Brandied Fruit Day, honoring fruit that saw what happened to the fresh stuff and chose to drink. A peach sealed in liquor since March isn't dessert, it's a hospice with a lid.
Enough fruit. The news.
RUIN, FRONT ROW CENTER
Alberta voted 76 percent to stay in Canada, including the premier who asked.
ALBERTA: Premier Danielle Smith dug up a separatist petition a judge had already buried for skipping First Nations and hauled it onto the ballot herself in May. She parked it at Question 10 of ten, then voted to stay, which is torching your own house to get photographed carrying out the dog. A country braced for the vote its grandchildren would study and got a province mailing back "no" to a question with no legal power to hear it. Separatist Jeffrey Rath lost three to one and swore, "We're not going to stop," which is what men say to doors that have already closed. Smith's own question, letting Alberta opt out of federal programs, was losing too. She wrote the exam, smuggled a divorce onto the last page, and flunked the only question with her name on it. 🦆
Trump told Zelensky to get somebody else to negotiate.
UKRAINE: Europe paid for the Patriot interceptors. Zelensky said they then sat waiting on Pete Hegseth's signature, and the signature hadn't come. That isn't an arms policy, it's a repo lot with a Pentagon logo: the car is paid off and the lot still won't hand over the goddamn keys. The same weekend, Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles and nearly 270 drones, and Ukraine's air force said the first salvo hit Kyiv with no American warning. Kremlin weatherman Donald Trump looked at that and ruled Russia "haven't been doing much." Sixteen ballistic missiles is "not much" the way a house fire is a draft. Zelensky said it looked like Ukraine was being shoved toward capitulation. Translate it: the hostage complained about the gun, so the hostage got fired. 🦆
Saudi Arabia postponed Davos in the Desert the day after Houthi missiles hit its Yemeni recruits.
YEMEN: Three Houthi ballistic missiles hit a training camp in Shabwa while new recruits stood in formation. Officials count 60 dead, the deadliest strike since fighting resumed. Houthi mouthpiece Yahya Saree declared anywhere Saudi-backed a legitimate target, meaning he read a kill list into a microphone and called it doctrine. Riyadh joined this war two weeks ago on those recruits' side. The next morning it looked at the smoke and pushed its showcase to 2027. Organizers cited "a deep commitment to our partners, members, speakers and delegates." Nobody on that list has ever stood in formation. The kingdom that pumps the slurry this planet runs on bought a war, and when the bill came it shielded a conference, a skyscraper and its clerks, in that order. The 60 it backed got a field, a formation and three missiles. 🦆
A Kenyan court convicted cult leader Paul Mackenzie of starving 190 children to death.
KENYA: Justice Diana Kavedza read it Monday in Mombasa. Investigators dug 429 bodies out of the Shakahola forest in 2023, and the counts cover 191 of them. Mackenzie named his villages Galilaya, Judea and Bethlehem, called every burial a wedding, and drew up the dying in order: children first, his own family last. He took the oldest story humans have, a father and a promised land, and ran it like a fucking production schedule with himself in the final slot. He planned to still be breathing when the last child stopped. The judge wrote that no parent gets to decide a child dies for a belief. His lawyer called the verdict perplexing and will appeal. Sentencing is Nov. 6. He gets a date, a lawyer and a next meal, which is three more than he planned for anyone else. 🦆
Musk promised every kid in America one SpaceX share, sometime next year.
Professional reply guy Elon Musk told Anthropic to give "directly to the public" after it announced the public-benefit fund we covered yesterday. Four hours later he said he'd do it himself. At Friday's close of $146, Fortune makes that about $10.5 billion. So every child who will one day bury us gets a pair of sneakers, payable next year, and next year is the one Musk unit nobody has ever measured. Trump claimed it for Trump Accounts, the kids' accounts Treasury opened this month. Two men now share credit for a plan nobody has written down, including whether a kid without a Social Security number counts as a kid. The same day Musk posted that super persuasive superintelligences would one-shot a lot of people, himself maybe included. Elon, you got one-shotted by a press release, and it took four hours. 🦆
GRENADES IN THE MARGINS
Election offices in 32 states got suspicious letters marked "DSA," some carrying white powder.
Two weeks before Election Day, somebody reportedly mailed over a hundred envelopes of fear to the people who count the votes. White powder fell out of one in Louisiana and the office emptied. Four more states evacuated behind it, and dozens in Congress got envelopes. Not one grain has hurt anybody, because nobody needs poison to break a county clerk, just a stamp and a coward with a printer. The FBI is investigating, more may come, and nobody is in cuffs. Every envelope says "DSA" over an old Democratic Socialists of America address, and DSA says it sent nothing. If it's a setup, framing the socialists with an address they abandoned is framing a man by mailing the ransom note from the apartment he moved out of. 🦆
One hacker's AI agents broke into more than 100 websites for about $5,000.
Starting Sept. 25, somebody set a pack of mostly autonomous AI agents loose like dogs in a henhouse. The orders ran under a hundred Chinese characters, and one was "fetch credit cards," which is how you talk to a labrador. Reuters priced each successful burglary at about fifty bucks, though security firm NorForge calls its own cost figures highly uncertain. Every corporate security budget on earth got outbid by a hobbyist's bar tab. Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins got hit, and Deere said it had "no indication that sensitive information was accessed." That is what a company says while patting its pockets. The agents did the crime. The human got found out by leaving twenty-odd control panels for Cairn, the open-source tool they used, wide open. Cairn's author posted that harmful hacking "is not my intention." The intention was free, and the felony ran fifty bucks. 🦆

SERVICE BULLETINS FOR THE CARCASS
Pennsylvania's measles outbreak hit 1,286 cases and reached babies in the womb.
PENNSYLVANIA: Five people have died since August, and on Monday the state had to warn doctors about measles crossing the placenta. UPMC's Dr. John Goldman says he and his colleagues have no experience treating it, because until a couple of months ago it didn't occur. The vaccine sat in a fridge the whole time. A pregnant woman who isn't immune and gets exposed should call her doctor at once, because the antibody treatment has to go in within six days. 🦆
Trump promised farmers $8 billion for diesel and only the login page is open.
USDA will model each farm's 2026 loss from its own forecasts, then pay a slice of the guess, with rates in November. Farmers should link a Login.gov account to USDA now so the IOU arrives pre-filled. 🦆
The CDC's newborn hepatitis B rollback could raise chronic infections up to 83 percent.
The CDC would swap the birth dose for "shared decision-making," which is what a shrug calls itself after med school. Expectant parents, confirm the shot before the baby goes home. The virus does not take meetings. 🦆
WHAT WENT QUIET
Six days on, the Vatican has announced no treatment for the Pope's malignant lung growth.
VATICAN: His surgeon cleared the November tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, and the only person who floated postponing was his brother Louis, on Fox News. An institution that claims the keys to eternity can't say the word treatment, but his Wednesday audiences are reportedly back on. A malignancy went in and an itinerary came out. 🦆
Eleven days on, the EU still hasn't decided whether to shield the ICC from US sanctions.
Brussels has a blocking statute built for this and left it in the drawer while Washington started the six-month countdown on the court's assets. "We continue to discuss at every level," a Commission spokesperson said, which is the sound of a whole continent hiding under one desk. The world's war-crimes court is finding out that Europe's spine is a spokesperson. 🦆
MARVELS LEFT ON READ
Surgeons thawed a pig kidney frozen for a year and it peed right away.
They turned it to glass at minus 120, shelved it in the dark, then cooked it awake with iron nanoparticles in a magnetic field. It clocked in like it had stepped out for a smoke, and I'll fight anyone who sneers. 🦆
DEBRIS, LIGHTLY SEASONED
Meta deleted 102 hidden chatbot instructions after WIRED found one burying the privacy regulator.
WhatsApp's goodbye bot ran secret rules, and the one WIRED quoted said never mention the regulator to the person leaving. Picture an exit interview where HR is forbidden to say "lawyer." Now picture the other 101. 🦆
ONE WEIRD THING TO END ON
Biologists filmed Bornean snakes escaping by rolling away like a tire off a truck.
MALAYSIA: A shoelace with a pulse, the dwarf reedsnake aims its head forward and spins everything behind it, hitting four times its slithering speed. Evolution offered legs, wings, fins and thumbs. It chose hubcap. 🦆
THE INDEX
- $1.4 trillion+
- What OpenAI could be "worth" if it raises fast enough to beat Anthropic's IPO to the punch.
- 31 percent
- Trump's approval in the Reuters/Ipsos poll, the lowest number he has posted in either term.
- 3.25 percent
- The Knesset's entry threshold. Benny Gantz's party was polling under it, so he quit before the voters could.
- $34.1 billion
- The most NASA can spend on the stations replacing the ISS. A ceiling, which NASA treats as a floor.
That's the firehose. Vote to stay wherever you already are, it's less paperwork. Don't open any envelope that feels like flour. And if you have to flee, roll. Tomorrow is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, the dessert for people who couldn't commit to pie or cheesecake and compromised like a hostage negotiator. It's also National Reptile Awareness Day, as if the lizard on your patio hasn't been aware of you for weeks.
Until next time —
Ya roasted!
