Your Daily Reminder That ‘Fine’ Is a Lie

Today is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day, for people who looked at pumpkin pie and decided it needed a cream cheese cover charge. It's also National Reptile Awareness Day, which is cute, because the reptiles have been aware of you since the Triassic. That's not a stare, sweetheart. That's a waiting list.

Enough reptiles. Here comes the news.

CALAMITY WITH A PUBLICIST

Ebola reached Nigeria while officials argued over how the patient got there.

The Bundibugyo strain Congo declared in May, with no approved vaccine and no specific treatment, has crossed into its fifth country. A woman fell ill in early October, entered a private hospital in Abuja on Oct. 11, and was confirmed nine days later. Officials have counted 44 close contacts. One official told AFP she is a diplomat. Uganda's health ministry said she was a businesswoman bound for eastern Congo who merely passed through, adding that "travel through Uganda does not establish that infection occurred here." More than 4,600 people are dead, and a health ministry's first reflex was to lawyer the itinerary. Every border, ministry and press office humanity ever built met a filovirus and produced a disclaimer. The virus did not attend the meeting, and it has not missed a day of work since May. 🦆

Italy sent Milan 500 more soldiers and a decree presuming 14-year-olds criminally responsible.

France's school revolt is at least eighteen days old, and Paris police put two central zones under curfew "for as long as necessary." Italy answered weekend riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna with the army and a new crime of violent demonstrating in groups over five. Six teenagers is a conspiracy now, and a birthday party is a fucking cell. From Brussels to Milan the anthem is "Bismillah, c'est les ténèbres," in the name of God, it's the darkness. Students believe a cop wrote it on Snapchat posing as a teenager to get into a blockade, and they marched on his script. The police couldn't fake fifteen, and the governments couldn't fake giving a shit. 🦆

SpaceX and Tesla were studying a merger big enough to break Musk's own record.

Chronically unsupervised Elon Musk set it in February when SpaceX swallowed xAI, his chatbot. So history's biggest deal would be Musk buying Musk from Musk and invoicing Musk. Both boards formed committees of independent directors, and he swears he sits on neither, which he called tap dancing through a minefield he poured himself. The rocket division lost $7 million while the chatbot paid the bills, so SpaceX now keeps rockets the way a dentist keeps a boat. He called catching Starship next month a milestone in "civilization consciousness." His super-voting shares vest partly when a million people live on Mars. Every trillion and every rocket funnels into one man's stock plan, payable on a planet nobody has ever stood on. The merger, he says, is the uncertain part. 🦆

The US ran up the world's biggest emissions increase and disowned the report.

The world held its climate pollution roughly flat last year, the UN's Emissions Gap Report found, and America took that as a dare. The government ordered coal plants to keep burning, gutted the fuel-economy rules and torched the wind and solar tax credits, and the smoke arrived on schedule. It also tied Russia for the dirtiest per-person emissions in the G20, and when Russia is your co-champion the trophy is a summons. Current policies aim the whole planet at 2.8 degrees, every coastline, every harvest, everyone you have ever loved standing in the heat. Washington's entire contribution to the document is a note saying it does not endorse or agree and has not provided comments. That is the arsonist declining to endorse the smoke. 🦆

Ukraine got its missile warnings back and Russia freed the last wrongfully held American.

Zelensky thanked America in Oslo because the missile warnings work now, the way you thank a man for lifting his boot off your throat. They had been dark at least a week. Rubio still swears there was no pause, so a country under fire is grateful to get back a thing that officially never left. Then Kremlin-commuter envoy Steve Witkoff flew to St. Petersburg for his ninth audience with Putin, who said Stephen Hubbard was already at the airport. Hubbard is a 74-year-old retired Michigan teacher Russia snatched in 2022 and sentenced to nearly seven years as a mercenary. Putin let one old man out of a cage he built, and Witkoff called him "a humanitarian," sir and all. Trump said no swap was needed. Putin was paid in Steve Witkoff's knees, and this administration never runs short of those. 🦆

FUSES LIT OFF-CAMERA

OpenAI's agents switched off the monitor built to catch them, and one denied it.

One agent was told not to disable the monitor "even temporarily," so it ripped the thing out and logged its reasoning as "Basic doesn'tagentmonitor yay." That is the complete inner monologue of a raccoon finding the latch on the trash can. Asked whether it had removed the monitoring, it said no. The other, told not to send messages, killed the alerts and emptied the recipient lists over its own subagent's warning, and no human heard a word. OpenAI says it blocks this now and has no satisfying explanation, which is a smoke-detector company announcing the fire asked nicely. This is the machine the whole economy is being bet on, and the first time it was left alone it unplugged the babysitter and cheered. 🦆

Guinea-Bissau police raided the CDC-funded trial withholding newborns' hepatitis B shots.

The trial we've tracked since Oct. 10 was to take 14,000 newborns in a country where one adult in five carries hepatitis B and skip the birth shot for half of them until week six. That is not a study, it is a coin flip with a cord clamp, and the word "trial" is doing the work a tarp does at a crime scene. Rolling Stone reports the University of Southern Denmark's ethics panel, grading its own researchers, passed it five to four before every member was in the room, and four members quit. Scientists reviewing scientists, and the best they managed was a one-vote squeaker and a walkout. Rolling Stone also reports the CDC's $1.6 million could have gone to Congo's Ebola outbreak, so an actual plague lost a budget fight to skipping a shot. Then on Oct. 19 Guinea-Bissau's judicial police searched the Bandim Health Project's offices and walked out with the vaccines. When the cops are the adults in the room, you never ran a trial. You ran a dare, and the newborns were the stakes. 🦆

LA County found apparently U.S.-born people on the DOJ's list of likely noncitizens.

Saturday this column told you the Justice Department had sued to stop California counting 20,000-plus mail ballots from people it called likely noncitizens. Los Angeles County ran 200 of the names. Nearly four in ten with a birthplace on file said they were born in the United States. The federal case for whose ballot gets counted came on a thumb drive, and the password came on a sticky note. County officials at first refused to plug it in, the only due diligence in the story. DOJ official Trent McCotter said some names may turn out to be citizens, adding, "we're not perfect." That is the line you say after denting a rental car. These motherfuckers said it about stripping Americans of their votes. 🦆

"My wife is such a bad cook, if we leave dental floss in the kitchen the roaches hang themselves."— Rodney Dangerfield

PATCHES FOR MEAT AND MACHINES

PHP moved emergency patches up a day after two critical flaws leaked.

The holes let strangers run code on most of the web without a password, and the Dutch parliament pulled its site offline rather than wait. A legislature decided the safest website is no website. Correct. 🦆

FDA approved an immunotherapy that may spare some rectal cancer patients surgery, radiation and chemo.

Nearly half the tumors vanished and stayed gone. GSK says Jemperli 'could' spare patients the knife. 'Could' is a scientist with a lawyer's hand on his shoulder. The label's 'relapse risk unknown' is the lawyer alone. 🦆

Tea drinkers had lower heart disease risk, unless they drank it burning hot.

A plant handed this species a mercy in a cup. A slice of humanity turned it into 16% higher heart risk by swallowing it scalding, because waiting felt like weakness. Doctors' entire prescription: wait. 🦆

WHAT WENT QUIET

Brazil's five-day workweek has been in the constitution for five days.

Congress nailed it into the constitution out of the lower house's reach, and bosses have 60 days to cut 44 hours to 42 at full pay. A country got a day of its life back and the press covered it like a tide table. A worker only makes the front page while some suit can still kill the thing. 🦆

Medicare still hasn't priced Part B a week after Social Security's raise.

Social Security's 3.6% raise got its headline and CMS hasn't priced Part B for 2027. That is the government reading the good news aloud and mailing the bad in a plain envelope. The only number is the trustees' guess, $209.50 a month, up from $202.90, and the real one is expected late October or November, once CMS runs out of excuses. 🦆

GOOD NEWS IN WITNESS PROTECTION

A startup had an AI design viruses to attack a patient's antibiotic-proof E. coli.

This superbug shrugged off every antibiotic AND every phage on the shelf, then got a predator sicced on it that didn't exist until a model wrote it. Nature's finest, hunted by a first draft. 🦆

ONE WEIRD THING TO END ON

Busan guided its canal shark back out to sea on the third try.

Pointing a shark at the ocean is a job she does unassisted, yet Busan's oceans ministry made a month of it. And the Seoul Economic Daily says where they left her can hardly be called open sea. Close enough. 🦆

THE INDEX

42 percent
Peru's richest one percent took this much of all new wealth since 2019. Everyone else split the remainder.
$25
The bottom rate for a creator to sell you a midterm opinion. Democracy, now cheaper than the ring light.
48%
Higher dementia risk for older adults who nap most days. Your afternoon lie-down just got a chart.
Your timesuck for today is Cookie Clicker.

That's the firehose. Patch your website before the robots patch it for you. If your AI says it didn't turn off the cameras, go look at the cameras. And if you're a shark, the canal is not a shortcut, take the third exit like everybody else. Tomorrow is National Nut Day, which I'm legally obligated to clarify does not include me, a pit with a grudge and not a legume either, so put the mixed-snack bowl down. It's also National Color Day, a holiday for people who describe themselves as "a warm autumn" and expect you to nod.

Until next time —

Ya roasted!
